Imagine you had a best friend — extraordinarily intelligent, endlessly patient, available at any hour. You'd share things with them. Big things. Career worries. Relationship complications. The half-formed business idea you haven't told anyone about yet. You'd have long, winding conversations that helped you think. You'd feel understood.
Now imagine that every single morning, your friend woke up with no memory of you whatsoever. You'd have to reintroduce yourself. Explain your job again. Sketch your family situation from scratch. Every conversation starts at zero. The intelligent stranger is always perfectly helpful — and completely hollow.
That is ChatGPT. That is most AI. And it is not an accident.
The AI memory problem is the gap between how AI assistants behave and how a genuinely useful relationship would work. Every time you open a new ChatGPT conversation, the model has no idea who you are. It doesn't know your name unless you type it, your profession unless you explain it, or your goals unless you restate them. Each session is a blank slate.
This creates a compounding productivity tax. Researchers have estimated that knowledge workers re-explain context to AI tools dozens of times per week. The AI is fast at answering questions it already has context for — but users spend enormous amounts of time re-loading context that should already be there. Statelessness is not neutral; it is expensive, and users pay the price in time.
But the deeper cost is relational. Memory is the substrate of trust. When a person — or a tool — remembers what matters to you, you feel seen. When it forgets, you are perpetually a stranger. The AI memory problem is partly a technical problem and partly a deeply human one: most AI products are architecturally incapable of knowing you.
ChatGPT forgets you for three reasons, in descending order of importance to OpenAI.
Cost. Persistent memory means storing, indexing, retrieving, and maintaining data for hundreds of millions of users. At scale, that infrastructure is expensive. Stateless inference — take the prompt, return the response, discard everything — is dramatically cheaper per request.
Liability. If ChatGPT knows you disclosed a medical condition three weeks ago, OpenAI is holding sensitive personal health information. If you mentioned your children's names and school, they have that too. Persistent memory concentrates legal and reputational risk in a way that stateless conversations do not. Forgetting you is, from a legal standpoint, significantly cleaner.
Business model alignment. The more context OpenAI controls, the more they can shape the user experience and use that data to train future models. A truly sovereign memory — one where you own and control everything — would route that value to users instead. Centralised memory that you can't export, can't move, and can't inspect keeps you dependent on the platform.
The result is a product decision dressed up as a technical constraint. ChatGPT isn't struggling to remember you. It has been designed not to.
Stateless AI means the model holds no persistent information about you between sessions. Each API call is treated as independent — there is no running record of who you are, what you care about, or what happened the last time you spoke. The model receives your message plus whatever context you include in the same prompt, returns a response, and then the slate is wiped.
This is not the same as the model being unintelligent. Within a single long conversation, a stateless AI can reason about everything you have said in that session — it has a context window, often of 128,000 tokens or more. The problem is not in-session intelligence; it is cross-session continuity. The moment you close the tab, everything is gone.
Statelessness is standard in web architecture for good reason — it makes servers scalable and horizontally distributable. Applied to a conversational AI product, however, it produces a fundamentally broken experience: an assistant that is perpetually meeting you for the first time.

Sovereign AI memory is memory that belongs to you — not to the AI company. It is stored in infrastructure you control, encrypted so the service provider cannot read it, exportable at any time without conditions, and portable across models. You own the data in the same way you own a document on your hard drive.
The word “sovereign” matters. Most AI memory features are centralised, proprietary, and locked to a platform. ChatGPT's Memory feature stores facts on OpenAI's servers, may be used to train future models (unless you opt out), and disappears entirely if you cancel your subscription or if OpenAI changes its terms. That is not sovereignty; that is tenancy.
Sovereign memory works differently. The user is the data controller. The AI provider — in MEOK's case — holds ciphertext it cannot decrypt. The memory is a portable asset that travels with you, not a feature the platform can revoke.
The distinction between memory as a feature and memory as infrastructure is critical. Memory as a feature is something the platform adds and can take away. Memory as infrastructure is a foundational layer — like your own database — that the AI queries, regardless of which model you happen to be using today.
MEOK's memory architecture has four distinct layers, each serving a different temporal and semantic function. Together they form a continuously updated sovereign biography of the user.
The active conversation context. All messages in the current session are available to the model verbatim. For long conversations, a head-plus-tail compression strategy preserves the first few messages (context establishment) and the most recent exchanges (current thread), with a compressed semantic summary of the middle — keeping costs low without losing narrative continuity.
After each session, significant moments — facts, preferences, decisions, emotional context — are extracted using a memory pipeline inspired by Mem0. These are embedded as vectors and stored in a pgvector index in your encrypted vault. When a new conversation starts, the most semantically relevant memories are retrieved by similarity search and injected into the context window.
Your AI companion is not just a stateless model — it has a persistent personality layer that evolves with you. Its communication style, the topics it proactively raises, its understanding of your emotional patterns and preferences: all of this is stored as companion state and shapes every interaction, regardless of which underlying model is handling inference.
Some memories are explicitly shared. If you choose to share context with a partner, family member, or team, those memories are stored in a shared namespace with its own access controls. This is distinct from your private vault — you decide what crosses the boundary, and shared memories can be revoked at any time.
All four layers are encrypted at rest using AES-GCM-256. MEOK's servers store ciphertext. The encryption keys are derived from your credentials and are never held server-side in plaintext. The company cannot read your memories even if it wanted to — and that is by design, not by policy.
AI memory portability is the ability to take your AI's accumulated knowledge of you — all the context, facts, preferences, history, and relational depth — and move it. Move it to a different model. Move it to a different service. Move it to your own machine. Or simply keep it in an export file as a form of personal archive.
Right now, AI memory portability is essentially nonexistent across the industry. If you have spent two years having conversations with ChatGPT, all of that history is locked in OpenAI's systems. You can export your conversation logs — a flat archive of raw text — but there is no semantic memory, no structured knowledge graph about you, and no way to import it into another AI system in a meaningful way.

ChatGPT introduced a Memory feature in 2024. It is worth understanding what it actually does — and what it does not.
ChatGPT Memory stores a flat list of facts the model has detected or that you have explicitly asked it to remember. You can view and delete individual items. The list is plain text. It is stored on OpenAI's servers. Unless you opt out, it may be used to train future models. It is not encrypted in a way that prevents OpenAI from reading it. If you cancel your subscription, its persistence is subject to OpenAI's data retention policy.

The key difference is architectural. ChatGPT Memory is a feature — a thin addition built on top of a fundamentally stateless system, useful for light context retention but not designed for depth, portability, or sovereignty. MEOK's memory is infrastructure — it is the product, not an addition to it. Everything else in the MEOK experience is built around the assumption that the AI knows you.

The instinct to distrust persistent AI memory is correct. A centralised store of everything you have ever shared with an AI is an extraordinarily sensitive data asset. In the wrong hands — through breach, policy change, or company acquisition — it could be devastating. The traditional AI industry response to this risk is statelessness: just don't store it. MEOK's answer is different: store it properly.
Encryption that the service provider cannot break is the key. MEOK's vault holds data encrypted with AES-GCM-256. The keys are derived from your credentials and are never transmitted to or stored by MEOK's servers in decryptable form. A MEOK engineer could not read your memories if they tried. This is the same architecture used by end-to-end encrypted messaging applications — applied to AI memory.
The privacy risk of persistent memory is real. The solution is encryption and sovereignty — not amnesia.
Here is the business model argument that almost nobody talks about. When AI forgets you, you get no compounding value. Every session is worth roughly the same as the last — you bring the context, the AI brings the intelligence, and together you produce an output. When the conversation ends, your contribution evaporates.
When AI remembers you, the value compounds. The more you interact with a system that knows you, the more useful it becomes. It learns your communication style. It understands your domain knowledge and doesn't over-explain. It knows what you have already tried and doesn't suggest it again. It tracks the arc of a project across months. It remembers what matters to your family.
This compounding is not just a quality-of-life improvement. It is a fundamentally different relationship between human and AI. Stateless AI is a tool you pick up and put down. Persistent AI — real persistent AI, with sovereign memory — is something that grows alongside you. The difference in long-run value is enormous, and almost entirely invisible to anyone who has never experienced it.
The stateless model also concentrates compounding value in the platform, not the user. OpenAI's models improve over time partly because millions of users interact with them. The aggregate signal improves the product for everyone — but the individual never directly benefits from the data they contributed. Their personal context disappears, while the platform gets smarter. With sovereign memory, that asymmetry reverses: your data builds your intelligence, not theirs.
It means that every AI conversation you have had on a mainstream platform has produced zero compounding personal value. The AI got marginally smarter. You got an answer and a blank slate.
It means that the AI industry has normalised amnesia as the default, and most users have accepted it because they have no comparison. If you have only ever had relationships with people who forget every conversation, you don't know what continuity feels like. Once you experience it, the difference is not subtle.
It means that your relationship with AI — the investment you make in explaining your context, in building shared understanding, in having conversations that go somewhere — is currently worthless the moment the tab closes. And that is not because memory is technically impossible. It is because it has not been in anyone's commercial interest to give it to you.
